MARCH UPDATE

the morning breeze carried the scent of a wisteria, climbing slowly but surely as it propped itself against the schoolhouse in bright petals. inside, an empty classroom had been left in disarray. everyone was in the yard, admiring the pokemon that had been brought for show-and-tell by various volunteers.

iseult was one of them.

“fire can be powerful in many ways.”

beside her, rapidash’s smokeless flames flickered, hypnotizing to young eyes.

”it can be beautiful; it can save lives, but it can also be dangerous, and destructive—which is why we must always be respectful.”

she looked up into the deep square pupil over her shoulder.

”with respect, we can build trust.”

as though to prove her point, her hand went to run through the flames of the rapidash’s mane, eliciting a few gasps from students expecting her to pull back hurt.

”once you befriend a rapidash, their flames no longer burn you.”

a little violet-haired boy on the edge of his seat quickly raised his hand, speaking ahead of himself anyways.

”how long did it take you to be seurat’s friend?”

iseult smiled, ”not too long—but it did take some patience—”

“oh. that makes sense. my mum said sometimes friendships take time to grow.”

charmed, iseult nodded, ”yes, i suppose she's right.”

her gaze lingered on the boy a second longer, before she looked over the rest of the small faces still glued to her very interesting companion.

”any more questions, before i turn you over to your next guest?”

Elinor gazed upon the crowd of children. It reminded her of a time, a time before she realized the wrongs of her life. But today was not about her. She was here as a volunteer from the Rangers. Clad in a more casual grey-and-white suit, with the red- armband, and emblem of the Rangers resting upon her right arm.

The subject show and tell was on the menu today. She remembered show and tell from her school days. It was probably the most fun she had had back when she was at that age. Back when touching a Pokémon was the height of her career.

She watched as her fellow Volunteer captivated the children with her fiery Pokémon. She couldn’t help but smile and be amused by the simplicity of their reactions, their questions, and their answers. It was nice to have a simple, no-stakes situation to handle.

Her fellow volunteer asked if there were any more questions. And while it seemed like the rest of the class didn’t have any. There was always THAT ONE KID. We all know the type. Small, frail, and pale-skinned, with thick glasses and oily hair, a person who started every second sentence with ‘actually’ and this would be no exception. He raised his hand but didn’t wait his turn. “Actually, my father says all fire types with constant flames on their bodies can control what they burn, otherwise they’d lit everything near them on fire.” He heaved some air in through his nose as he finished speaking, clearly, he was struck by some sort of allergy, right before pushing his glasses back up on the bridge of his nose.

A small almost unnoticeable sigh escaped Elinor. She recognized the type, even if she hadn’t met the kid before. She looked towards Iseult wondering how she would handle this one.

iseult knew the type. they existed at all ages—but she couldn’t fault him. he valued his knowledge; this was a good trait to have. all good things needed to be nurtured. humbleness was not hers to teach him.

”very good.” she smiled, ”rapidash can be particularly picky creatures—but your father is correct.”

with a graceful nod, her eyes left the bespectacled nerd and cast across the group again. many were still in an easily-enchanted daze. there was a quieter, ”i wanna touch him,” and a ”yeah, me too,” before a teacher quelled such dreams, ”we’re not touching things today, norman. we've been over this.”

iseult pretended not to hear them.

”any other questions, comments?”

if not, they would move on to the next volunteer. perhaps the blonde-haired woman, somewhere near her age, who’d been watching the exchange.

Elinor watched quietly as her fellow Volunteer handled the nerdy geek perfectly. Elinor was surprised at how well she did. Did she perhaps have some experience with handling children? She would have to ask her later if given the opportunity.

She couldn’t help but chuckle as she heard the small discussion between teacher and kid. She looked out over the crowd to see if there were any further questions. But there was none. And so she stepped forward, brushing away a small tuft of her long pink hair as she did.

“The dangers of a Fire-type are obvious. But we must not forget that Pokémon come in all shapes and sizes. Some small – “ She made broad gestures as she spoke, trying to make a little performance out of it for the children. She held one singular Pokéball in her right hand. “And some LARGE.” And as she emphasized the word large, she allowed the Pokéball to pop open and out manifested the large Steel/Ground-type Steelix. Its tail started upon Elinor’s left side, and led behind her as the Steelix towered over her, the children, and probably most of the playground equipment in the yard.

“Now, Steelix here might not accidentally burn you if you get too close. Nevertheless, its size can pose a danger, and it is therefore very important to handle it with respect and care.” She paused. Looking out over all of the gathered children, some of them looked a bit scared, but a lot of the boys seemed excited, maybe its appearance spoke to them.

A low rumbling emerged from Steelix’s mouth as it greeted the children. It enjoyed being bathed in the attention.

“Any questions before I continue?” Elinor asked looking out over the crowd, even sending a glance and a smile toward her volunteer.

it seemed there were no more questions for her. she wasn’t too disappointed about it, honestly.

seurat was led out of the way to make room for the pink-haired woman and whatever surprise she’d brought along. they watched from off to the side, both curious.

ooh’s and ah’s could be heard when the massive iron serpent appeared in a red glow. the wonder that reflected in rows of eyes surpassed even what iseult and her rapidash had inspired. iseult herself was a awestruck, having only seen a steelix in person from a distance, behind railing at tournaments—never this close. they were titans.

one of the kids piped up promptly.

“how heavy is steelix? does it accidently crush stuff a lot?”

She had conquered the attention of the children. She had asked for questions, and though she didn’t see a forest of hands shoot up, she still posed a single question regarding its size. “That is a very good question.” She pointed towards the kid who had asked, acknowledging his search for answers.

“I will start by admitting that I haven’t checked the weight of my Steelix.” She gestured to the giant steel snake behind her. “However, I know that Steelix as a specie has a starting weight of around four-hundred kilograms.” She stated. She looked to gauge the reaction of the children, to see if they knew just how heavy that was.

“And yes, it does crush things a lot. But I won’t say that it does so by accident, it knows how much space it needs to move around, and it will claim that space if there is nothing important around it.” She gave a small pause figuring this would be a good lead-in to the subject she wanted to teach the children. “Steelix are very much aware of their surroundings, maybe even more so than other Pokémon.” She pointed to the Steelix’s head. “When they are not resting, this is usually the position they will take as it offers them the widest field of vision.” She stated.

The Steelix moved around as it towered them, showing how it could easily look around from up there.

“But they can’t see everywhere all the time. That’s why when handling Steelix and Pokémon of comparable size, it is always important to let them know where you are, whether by sound or sight.” Her speech ended, giving the children the time to absorb the new knowledge.

“Any other questions?” She beamed a reassuring smile to the crowd, hoping they weren’t afraid to ask.

A row of hands rose up into the air. Elinor pointed at one kid who had seemed awfully quiet for the majority of the time.

“Have you won a lot of fights with Steelix?” The kid didn’t seem all that interesting in the tales of Steelix behavior, though like other kids he seemed very fascinated with the idea of doing acts of Pokémon training, which funnily enough left out all the boring subjects like feeding and caretaking.

“I have yes. But remember kids, in a battle, it is not the size of the Pokémon that will win you the battle, but how you use it.” She spoke. Some kids in the back began to snicker, having clearly heard such a joke before.

“In fact, in a lot of battles, Steelix’s size can be a detriment against much smaller and faster opponents whom have the type advantage. But that’s a lesson all on its own, maybe later.” She gave the kid a smile and turned to the rest of the group.

“Any questions not related to battles?” She cheekily asked. A lot of hands fell down. Even the Steelix couldn’t contain the chuckle which was building inside of it from the display. This time she pointed towards a little girl whose hand barely reached over her classmates.

“How do you know if it’s a boy or a girl?” The girl asked innocently. Though the other kids began to giggle some embarrassed, some not surprised.

Elinor gave the girl a smile and said. “Well, its very hard to know that. The only way I know off is to look at their teeth.” The kids looked surprised and confused for a second. “Among the Steelix specie, the females lack an outer tooth on each side.” The Steelix turned its head showing its large outer tooth on each side, proudly.

“Can you tell me which gender this Steelix is?” Elinor asked the girl who had given the question.

She seemed lost in thought at first. But then smile and said. “He’s a guy!”

Elinor nodded and smiled. “Any more questions?” And with that the hour continued. Many a question asked, some goofy, others serious. But all were answered as honestly as she could. Her partner had gone very quiet, she wondered if the woman was feeling alright. But figured she could ask her later.
